MARSEILLE SOAP

Since 1828

Marseille Soap is much more than a soap. It is the pride of Provence. The passion of a craft. A praise to nature. A wholesome presence. A lifestyle. For us, pioneers in the art of making the true Marseille soap. It’s the reminder of the trust our clients have shown us for 185 years.

At the Rampal Latour soap factory, tradition rhymes with innovation

Rampal Latour’s secret? From a taste for innovation, for the constant modernization of production tools to the audacity of manufacturing propositions. All that of course, without skimping on the quality and tradition.

In the footsteps of Pierre Rampal, producer of Marseille Soap in 1828

Rampal Latour’s secret? From a taste for innovation, for the constant modernization of production tools to the audacity of manufacturing propositions. All that of course, without skimping on the quality and tradition.

An «old-fashioned» production

The steps in the production of Marseille soap are precise and exacting. With his know-how the master soap maker guarantees the authenticity and insures the quality all the way up to packaging. We guarantee that our Marseille Soap is still made in a cauldron as in the method used in the famous Marseille procedure.

THE STEPS IN SOAP MAKING BY CAULDRON

To obtain the real Marseille soap following the famous Marseille procedure, it takes several days in a cauldron. In keeping with tradition the oils, exclusively vegetal, are heated to 120° in the cauldron (olive, palm and copra) the saponification, a chemical operation adding caustic soda, which transforms the liquid oils into a thick mass of fatty acids. This is called «EMPATAGE».

The next step is «RELARGAGE» or «salting out». This is the process of adding softened water to eliminate the excess of glycerin. After that is «COOKING» and again «WASHING» this time with salt water to eliminate then excess soda. Finally «LIQUIDATION» to give the soap its final texture, a paste of extra pure soap, rid of all impurities and non-processed fatty acids.

At the Rampal Latour factory we guarantee the quality of the extra pure soap paste made in the cauldron following the «Marseille» procedure.

The art of DRYING

Inside our century old factory, always following tradition, we pay particular attention to the finishing touches: open air drying of the raw paste on wooden frames to obtain a supple and malleable product until molding using our traditional machines from the 1960’s. It’s the hand-on labor and the choice of the best time to mold the soap that brings the irreplaceable human touch to our Marseille soap.

CASTING: like a music of movement

Toughened by time and heavy with nearly 300 cubes of 600 g, the wood frames on wheels are brought in close to the casting machine that dates from the 50’s. Our craftsmen carefully take each cube and push them, one by one, towards the bronze cast that will stamp them on all 6 sides, another guarantee of an authentic, extra pure Marseille Soap.

«OLD FASHIONED» SERIES

For our special limited series, we use a hammer and boxwood stamps from our unique collection dating from the XIXth century.

PACKAGING

A final quality control is done at the time of packaging, always by hand. Carefully, and with the assurance characteristic of the experienced hands of the craftsman who takes his time to guarantee the longevity and unequalled quality of our Marseille Soap.

A TRULY MODERN SOAP

Rampal Latour’s Marseille Soap is made exclusively from 100% vegetal oil: olive, copra and palm oil for the green Marseille soap and copra and palm for the traditional white. As all the products in our factory, the Extra Pure Marseille Soap is made with respect of the current norms for hygiene and traceability. It is truly the natural soap par excellence. Hypoallergenic, it contains neither artificial colors, preservatives nor perfumes. In 1940 René Rampal said «It is the purest and most gentle soap there is».

Unique virtues

Hypoallergenic, the Rampal Latour Extra Pure Marseille Soap carries our signature because it is simple, good and true. It is fascinating because of its natural and multi-use character, like a traveler across time: effective, practical, economical and ecological, while at the same time soothing and gentle as confirmed by dermatologists. Rampal Latour Marseille Soap, simply indispensable!
